Obituary for June Isabelle Daniel

June Isabelle Daniel of Kincardine passed away, with her family by her side, at Trillium Court Long Term Care on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at the age of 91.

Predeceased by her loving husband, Charles Daniel (2011) and cherished daughter Laurie Daniel (2010). Dear mother of Tom Daniel (Joan Kenny) of Whitby and James Daniel (Cindy Weidelich) of Kincardine. Beloved grandmother of Tawny Robinson (Andrew McFadyen) and Shannon Robinson (Evan Hoover).

June’s parents, Thomas and Isabelle Kilty moved to Kincardine in 1932 to operate the Royal Hotel and shortly after the Windsor Hotel. June’s first jobs were spent tending to the hotel's guests, waiting tables and delivering fresh fish from the boats at the harbour to the hotel kitchen for her mother to prepare. Growing up in Kincardine gave June a sense of community involvement and a passion for local history.

June attended public and high school in Kincardine. She continued her education at the Teacher’s College in Stratford, eventually joining the teaching staff at W.E. Thompson Public School in 1964. Remembered for her innovative and creative approach to teaching, June inspired her students to find answers their own way while fostering a classroom that often ventured outside the conventional curriculum. She retired from teaching in 1983.

Motivated by her love for the arts, June became one of the founding members of the Kincardine Theatre Guild. Along with her directing credits and elaborate costume designs, June will be remembered for creating “Kincardine Calls” with Ian Burbridge for the 1990 Old Boys Reunion. The iconic musical celebrated the history of Kincardine and the events that have shaped the town. “Kincardine Calls” has become a mainstay event of the Kincardine Reunion.

After a disastrous fire nearly destroyed the Paddy Walker House in 1995, June and other like-minded members of the community came together with the goal of restoring the local landmark. As a founding board member of the Paddy Walker House Heritage Society, she took great pride in creating memorable exhibits and organizing the annual Heritage Dinner to raise funds for the various restoration projects.

June’s historical accomplishments also include the Restoration of the Colours of the 32nd Battalion of Bruce Militia and chronicling the life of Dr. Solomon Secord, a Kincardine based doctor turned Civil War surgeon.

For her service to the Kincardine community, June was recognized as both the Citizen of the Year in 2002 and Senior of the Year in 2007.

Through her volunteer work, teaching and life on the farm, June devoted her time and energy into the community she proudly called home. Along the way, June surrounded herself with interesting and creative people, often sharing stories, songs and a glass of red wine. June will be fondly remembered by her family, friends and all those who knew her.

A come and go Celebration to honour June's life, will be held on Sunday December 10, 2023 at The Paddy Walker House, Kincardine, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. A time to share memories and enjoy photos.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Paddy Walker Heritage Society, Royal Canadian Legion Kincardine, or the Kincardine and Community Health Care Foundation as expressions of sympathy would be appreciated by June’s family.
