Obituary for Marie Erwina Wilson
It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Marie Wilson after a courageous battle with cancer, at the Huron Shores Hospice, Tiverton, on Saturday, October 17th, 2020, in her 65th year. Marie was born on June 26, 1956 in Barrie, ON, and grew up in Hespeler, ON. She was the eldest of four children born to Betty and Carlyle Wilson. She is predeceased by both parents, and her sister, Debbie.
She leaves behind her “faithful beloved,” Ken Battler; her three adored sons, Will Wilson-Battler (Denise), Nick Wilson-Battler (Claire), and Troy Wilson-Battler (Hannah). She is mourned by her brothers, John Wilson (Sandy), and Sandy Wilson (Paulina); brothers-in-law Keith Battler (Linda), Don Battler (Lynda), and Brian Battler (Bev). She had very special relationships with her nieces and nephews. They include: Easton (Christine) and Mercedes, who is also her goddaughter; Jenny and Jason; Brad, Brett, and Jessica; and Kyle and Ben. Marie also had a special bond with her godson, Adam. Marie will be sadly missed by her grandchildren Layne, Jackson, and Maeve; and Savannah, Luke, and Sean. For Marie, the sun rose and set on these children.
Marie was both a gifted writer and communicator. She received her BA Hons. in English from the University of Guelph. Finding few employment opportunities in the early eighties, she pursued a diploma in Journalism from Conestoga College. She accepted a position at the Kincardine News, eventually becoming its editor.
After raising her three sons, Marie worked in communications for Ontario Power Generation and then at Nuclear Waste Management Organization. She was always involved in her community. Among many other activities, she sponsored the Scottish Festival, and co-chaired the Old Boys’ Reunion. After retirement, Marie ran for council, serving as Deputy Mayor of the Municipality of Kincardine, until her recent passing. She brought intelligence, compassion, respect, and humour to every situation. She listened to everyone, returned every call, and weighed every decision carefully. Marie respected everyone—regardless of their station in life—and advocated for anyone who needed help.
Water was Marie’s element. She could be found swimming in Lake Huron, paddle-boarding, or just plain enjoying the beach. She was a lover of music, literature, and the arts. She loved dancing to Springsteen and attending the local Blues events. Marie’s spirit lives on in all who love her.
A private funeral service will be held at the Knox Presbyterian Church, Tiverton.
The visitation will be held at the Davey-Linklater Funeral Home, Kincardine on Tuesday, October 20th, 2020 beginning at 5:00 p.m..
